VIURAor Macabeo, as it is known outside of Rioja, is the most widely planted white grape variety in the region. It makes fruity wines with floral aromas and great acidity. This makes it a fantastic grape for both, young and aged wines. Typical aromas are floral and citrus. The main regions where you find Viura are Spain and France. TheMATURANA BLANCAgrape is the oldest grape variety known in Rioja and is mentioned in texts dating back to 1622. It has a low Ph and a high acidity and can produce very alcoholic wines. This grape has aromas of apple and herbs. The main region where you find Maturana Blanca is Spain. The nameMALVASÍAactually refers to an ancient family of grapes, many of which are grown in Portugal and Spain. In Rioja, it is usually blended with Viura, to add body and texture to the wine. These grapes typically have a low acidity with aromas that include notes of orange peel, dried fruits and nuts. You’ll find Malvasia grown in Spain, Italy, Portugal, Sicily, the Canary Islands, Greece, Croatia, Slovenia, and the USA. As you expect,GARNACHA BLANCAis the white version of the red Garnacha grape and like that one, it is like light skinned. Wines produced from this grape tend to be full bodied and golden straw colour. Typical aromas are green apples, stone fruits and mineral. This grape is grown in Spain, France and California.TEMPRANILLOis the region’s number one grape, and accounts for 75% of Rioja’s vineyards, it is special for numerous reasons. First of all, this is a great grape for aging, as it can withstand long period in casks, and secondly it has a very good balance for acidity and tannin. Typical aromas are strawberry and herbs, as well as blackcurrant, chocolate, tabaco, vanilla and leather. The main regions where you find Tempranillo are Spain, Portugal, Argentina, Australia and the USA.GARNACHAor grenache, as it is called in France and Italy, used to be the most widely planted grape in the World, and is one of the key grapes in Rioja. It is often blended with Tempranillo to make a typical rioja blend. Typically, garnacha has a low to medium tannin, and a low to medium acidity. Typical aromas are raspberry, spice, tobacco and cinnamon. The main regions where you find Garnacha are France, Spain, Italy, US and Australia. TheGRACIANOgrape is indigenous to Rioja and it is rarely found outside the area. This is possibly due to the cool climate and clay limescale soils that it needs to grow. It blends excellently with Tempranillo and has seen somewhat of a resurgence in recent years. Typical aromas are chocolate and violets and it has a medium acidity and a medium tannin. The main regions where you find Graciano are Spain, Australia and California.MAZUELOgrape is thought to have grown in Rioja for centuries but is no longer widely grown in the region. It is more commonly known around the world as Carignan, and makes up about 3% of Rioja’s vineyards and it is generally blended with Tempranillo. Mazuelo produces wines with high tannins, high acidity and aromas of black fruit, liquorice and pepper. The grape is grown in Spain, Sardinia and California.
As you’d expect from a country that boast more vineyards than any other,Rioja is a major producer of wine, and Spain is the 3rd larger producer in the World. In fact, around 280 to 300 million litres of Rioja is produced every year. That is enough to fill 120 Olympic swimming pools. The ninety percent of the production is red with rosé and white wine making up the rest. But this still isn’t as much as Bordeaux, which produces two and a half times more. One reason for this is it’s grapes, which have a lower yield and therefore produce less wine. So, how does the production process work in Rioja? Well, there are four categories of wines, these are: Vino Joven, Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva. The differences between each category is very simple, is just down on to how the wine is kept on oak and in the bottle. The timings are different for red wines and white wines. So, let’s start with Vino Joven, which means young wine. For red wines, these tend to be 1 or 2 years old and not oak aged. They are fresh and fruity, with low tannins and not so heavy. When you see a bottle of Rioja labelled simply Rioja, this is the young wine. Next, we have the Crianza, which should be at least 2 years old, and will have spent a minimum of one year in a cask and a few months in a bottle. These wines will probably have been aged in an oak cask that has been used before, what is called second used or third used barrels, it means, the flavour of oak will be less strong. Next, we have the Reserva, these wines will be from some of the best vintages and they will be aged for at least 3 years with at least 1 year in a cask. They should have a good tannin and good flavours of oak. And finally, we have got the Gran Reserva, and these are heavy hitters, they were produced using grapes from exceptional vintages and will have spent at least 2 years in oak casks and 3 years in a bottle. These wines will have high tannins and lots of powerful oaky flavour. But having said all of that, trying not to get too hung up on the labels, you can still find excellent wines that are Young or Crianza, in fact you may well find that you prefer the fruity freshness of the Young Rioja to an oak aged Gran Reserva, or that you prefer the medium balance of a Reserva to an older GranReserva. Since 1926 Rioja Wine has fallen under the classification system of the Denominación de Origen Calificada which you see to be abbreviated to D.O.C. and it is the first Spanish wine to be officially recognized and protected in this way.The D.O.C. regulations established a border within which Rioja label wine can be produced, and insure quality remains by restricting yields, so as to protect the land and the vines, while also checking and approving the winemaking techniques that are used. There are three regions from which all rioja wine comes from, these are Rioja Alta, Rioja Baja and Rioja Alavesa. Rioja Alta means High Rioja, and is the most western of the three regions. The vines grow far higher here than they do it in Rioja Baja, but at a similar altitude to Rioja Alavesa. The Ebro river flows through north of Rioja Alta, acting as a natural border between Alta and the neighbouring Alavesa. You will find the most beautiful historic town of Haro here, at 528 metres above sea level. The climate is more continental than in other parts of Rioja with hottest summers and longer autumns. Tempranillo grows abundantly in this region and this is where you find classic rioja’s style wines, which are often lighter and finer than those of the neighbouring Rioja Alavesa. Some famous wine producers include La Rioja Alta, Marqués de Murrieta and Marques de Cáceres. Rioja Baja is the Eastern most region of Rioja. The land is at a much lower altitude here at around 380 meters in the west and 301 metres in the east. The climate is hotter, drier and more Mediterranean making it perfect for growing garnacha. Wines produced here tend to be more spicy and peppery which is how the locals enjoy their wine. To the north of the river Ebro, is Rioja Alavesa, the smallest and most northern of the three regions. And the only appellation to fall outside of the La Rioja province, in the Alava region of the autonomist Basque Country. This region lies in the foothills of the cantabrian mountains, and while Rioja Alta might mean high rioja, is actually Alavesa that boasts some of the highest vineyards in all of Rioja. The climate here is cooler and wetter than in Alta and Baja and tempranillo is widely grown and harvested early for making younger and fresher wines, which is popular among the local Basque community. Rioja has an ancient history that dates back as far as 3,000 bC. The Phoenicians settled in Spain and began cultivating vines in 1100 bC, but disaster struck in the 700’s aC when the Moors arrived and the wine production all but stopped completely; thankfully medieval Christianity arrived in Spain, bringing trade and the monastic way of life, which resurrected the wine industry and the area soon began to flourish at least locally. It wasn’t until the phylloxera outbreak in the middle of the 1800’s the Rioja really came into its own. The phylloxera blight ruined virtually all of France’s vineyards forcing French wine merchants south to Rioja and with them they brought the traditional and prized wine making techniques of Bordeaux and the famous barrick style barrels. And under the Bordelaise influence, Rioja thrived and was soon exporting thousands of gallons of wine to its gallic neighbour. Fast-forward to the modern times and Rioja’s recent history is quite turbulent, after recovering from its own Philloxera outbreak at the start of the 20th century the wine became popular again in the 1970’s only to fall out of fashion in the 80s following a spell out all of overpriced and underperforming wines. A Successful Spanish Rioja Wine Tour! We really enjoyed our wine tour! They selected three different kinds of wineries which included traditional, modern, and one that even had vineyards on site! We recently completed the full Rioja wine tour which was extremely fun, informative, and included some special surprises throughout the day. We have been on many global wines tours that we pick specifically for the personal and small (or private) group atmosphere. This tour did not disappoint. Robert picked us up at a central meeting place close walking distance from our hotel in Logrono. He was very knowledgeable, courteous, and easy to interact with. Rioja is a very interesting place with lots of history and bodegas to visit. The wineries that Robert took us too were great choices for the group. The lunch at a local homestead was a nice touch and a fun part of the tour. We would certainly recommend the tour, which Rebeca (the owner) personally makes it easy to arrange and prompt with all communication.

What an amazing way to spend a day in La Rioja! This was easily a highlight of our trip, an amazing tour from start to finish. The wineries we visited gave us an amazing introduction to Spanish winemaking and long standing Rioja traditions, the wines were delicious of course, and I don't think we'll soon forget our delicious lunch or the amazing views of Rioja! We learned so much, and left not only more knowledgeable about wine in La Rioja, but with some new friends too!

Do not skip this tour! We are so grateful for taking this Rioja wine tour! 🥰 Our driver Fito picked up us with a van and has been a great company as well as the rest of the group we joined. We took three tours through local wineries with tastings and spent an awesome afternoon in Rebeca and Robert's house, wine yard and wine cellar. Can't be missed! Can't say enough great things about this Rioja wine tour. Although I absolutely love wine, some tours overwhelm you. This was a full day tour and was a great mixture of winery tours, lunch and just relaxing and enjoying. Great people, van was comfortable, and the tour size was perfect.

Our tour was curated by Rebecca and Frito, which brought us to Bohedal and Bodegas Carlos San Pedro. There was only 4 of us on the tour - we were picked up close to our hotel in Haro and brought to Bohedal first. This stop was met with an amazing second generation winery owner who gave a tour of the facility, followed a wonderful tasting. After leaving Bohedal, we went to Leguardia where we had a tour and tasting at Bodegas Carlos San Pedro. This was done in the most authentic way - walking through and having a tasting down deep in the caves where the wine is produced and stored. The surrounding shops and restaurants in the city were a perfect addition to our day.

Fantastic Probably one of the best wine tours ever. Each winery we visited was unique and we even were able to create our own special wine from three different barrels; so awesome. Another winery still uses the old tradition of smashing the grapes with your feet. They even have a festival in October where they invite you to participate in this method and we will be going back in the near future to take oart. The final touch was having a delicious lunch at Rebecca’s home with wine from her family’s vineyard. Such a special way to end the tour and a shout out to Fito for being such a great guide.

Wonderful full day wine tour in Rioja! My wife and I had a great tour of this region with Rebecca, Robert and Fito. The logistics were handled very professionally and we enjoyed both the wineries we toured in the morning. We had an extensive tour of each and the wines were excellent. This was followed by a lovely home cooked lunch and a further visit to a vineyard and a final tasting. Highly recommended!

Roberto and Rebeca were fantastic and made us feel right at home. Toured a few different wineries, met the winemakers, and learned a ton about the region. Will definitely do it again when we return to Rioja!

Fantastic tour of contrasting wineries. We had a wonderful half day Rioja wine tour with our guide, Fito. He was very knowledgeable about the region and wine. He took us two very different wineries. The first one was very old and traditional. The second one was more contemporary. It was a great day.

We had the most fantastic experience on our private full day wine tour. Rebeca planned a perfect day, visiting three different wineries that were each very different in their own way. We are from Oregon and do a ton of wine tasting so I wasn't that interested in "touring" the wineries but I'm so glad we did. The history and wine making in Spain is very different from what we are accustomed to here, making the tours really interesting, fun and informative. Our guide for the day, Fito, was fantastic. He was knowledgable, funny and very attentive to all of our needs. Highly recommend this Rioja wine tour. Rebeca was very responsive and helpful through the entire process. It was obvious she has a great relationship with each of the wineries we visited, they treated us like friends at each stop.

A most special experience which you will never forget! Absolute fantastic! Rebecca and Robert took us and four others on a full day tour to Rioja wineries and it ended up being the higlight of our Europe.travels. Instead of cramming in several wineries and do multiple tastings along a counter or similar, they had organised two very special tastings at two smaller wineries where we got to know the people and their wines. It included barrel and tank samples, mixing own wines and a vsist into the winemaking caves at a winery in La Guardia. We ended up at Rebeccas and Roberts home where we had a late lunch and tasted their own wine. I cannot recommend this tour enough, we spent three months touring Europe and South America and this was the best experience we had during that time. We will treasure this for ever ❤️

Our honeymoon in Logroño, Spain, was made unforgettable by an incredible full-day wine tour! From start to finish, Roberto was an outstanding guide—his sense of humor and deep knowledge of the region kept us entertained while teaching us about the local history and winemaking traditions. The itinerary was perfectly curated too - We visited both a traditional and a modern winery, learning about their unique techniques. We also explored cute villages and indulged in delicious cheese and pintxos, ensuring we were never hungry! The small group size (just four people) made the tour feel like a private experience. Fabulous One Day Winery Experience! We enjoyed and learnt so much! My partner and I were in Spain walking the Camino and we thought it would be a great experience to do a one day winery tour before returning home to Canada. I reached out to Rebeca only days before we needed to do a Rioja wine tour (we did not have flexibility to change dates) and she was able to arrange it for us. We did the full day Rioja wine tour, which includes 3 stops, and we were so wowed! Rebeca was quick with communication through out the booking process and leading up to the tour. Our guide, Fito, picked us up from our hotel and was great company for the day. He had deep knowledge of wine, the region, and the history. Excellent Rioja Wine Tours We spent two days touring with the Rioja Like A Native team. Fito did an excellent job leading us to the tours. Bodegas Muga and Bodegas Lecea were our two favorite places, although all of the tours were very good. Getting to spend time with Rebeca and Roberto was a fantastic experience and a great way to end the tour. Rebeca went above and beyond. She even lined up transportation for us from Madrid to La Rioja and from La Rioja to Bilbao. We highly recommend Rioja Like A Native!

This wine tour was the highlight of our 2 weeks in Spain. Even though we only had a Sunday available (and many wineries are closed) Rebeca planned an amazing day for us and was so knowledgeable about the area and wine! The 2 wineries she took us to were so different and it was fun to see how each worked. When we go back to Spain we will definitely do another Rioja wine tour with her.

The tour was well thought. We could see different Rioja regions, different styles of wineries and different stories beyond those wineries. I especially liked the small Emperatriz producer with a huge history. Wine tastings were really good. And the final homestyle lunch and personalized bottle of wine were a nice closing of the day.

The Best of Rioja - Wine and History. This was an absolutely fabulous tour. Amazing Tour of Rioja! I was in Spain for work, but extended my stay to visit Rioja right at the beginning of harvest season. As I was traveling solo, I wanted to join a group wine tour so I can enjoy the day with other wine enthusiasts. It was a nice diverse, international group. The day started promptly on schedule with a pick up at my hotel. Robert was our host for the day and he was immediately welcoming and engaging. We had short drive to the first vineyard (historical) that was very special. Robert shared some local knowledge and history with us as we drove. The host at the vineyard took us on a cool subterranean tour sharing the process they have used for hundreds of years. We sampled wines along the tour and then in their lovely barnhouse style tasting room. Wines were diverse and high quality. We then drove to the second vineyard (modern) and had our second tour, which was equally interesting to see the contrast with modern wine making. The wine tasting here was more formal and we got to sample a nice variety of beautiful wines. The day ended with a fantastic group lunch in a wonderful setting. After a hearty lunch, it was time for a tour of a grape field to learn more about cultivation and ended with a final blinded wine tasting. This is the type of tour that really lets your experience the culture, taste amazing wines and learn so much about the process and region.

This tour was absolutely AMAZING and a must if you are in Rioja and looking for an intimate and informative wine tour. Our guide, Fito, was communicative and great, and we were able to see some absolutely fascinating parts of the wine production process in Rioja. A fantastic & authentic tour, meeting small family producers. Having visited wineries and been on wine tours in France, Spain, Portugal and Italy, this was probably one of the best and most authentic tours I've been on. The wineries were small family run businesses which gave us a true understanding of Rioja and what passion goes into the wine. My wife and I spent our honeymoon in Spain, and this tour was the highlight. We were picked up from our hotel in Haro and then went to two incredible and different wineries. One was a small, family-owned winery that allowed us to try wine directly from the barrels (in addition to a tasting). The other was a beautiful winery that gave us a tour of the caves where they have been storing their wine for centuries. We then had a homemade lunch and more wine overlooking a vineyard in La Rioja. In our opinion, that was the best part! Rebeca and Roberto were phenomenal hosts, and they were also so nice to accommodate a vegan diet. We highly recommend!

Two perfect days. Fantastic La Rioja experiences. Wonderful guide & host. Worth a 6/5 rating. My wife & I are wine lovers and enjoy visiting wineries and vineyards in different regions. This was our first visit to La Rioja, we put it in the hands of Rioja Like A Native Wine Tours, and we could not have made a better decision. Starting with their informative website, followed by excellent pre-trip communication with Rebeca, the Founder of the business (who was so helpful with my many questions!), and then when we finally arrived at the Logroño train station and were met by delightful Fito, who would be our Guide for the next two days – our time in La Rioja with these friendly, kind, caring, knowledgeable, organized and professional people – good people – was excellent! We spent two days experiencing Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa “Like A Native” with these fine folks, mostly with Fito, who was great! We had fun, visited diverse wineries, learned a lot, tasted great wines, ate delicious food, saw historical and beautiful sites, and met very nice people. My wife and I felt like we were with friends & family. There is much more that I could write about our wonderful time and experiences with the good people at Rioja Like A Native Wine Tours. My husband and I did the full day Rioja Like a Native Wine Tour and it was the highlight of our 1 week trip in Spain. We've done several wine tours in the past (Napa Valley, Tuscany and Oregon to name a few), and this one was pretty unique and I really learned a lot. We tasted wine from the barrels, toured caves, and learned about the strict regulations in the region to make sure they produce the best quality wine. You get a lunch with the full day option, which was delicious and we had a fun time with our small group. Highly recommend, you will not be disappointed!

An outstanding full day tour with an exceptional guide We were an adult family group of eight and all wine-lovers, so we were looking forward to the full day private Rioja wine tour. Our host, Fito, did not disappoint us. The entire day was well-organised, informative, entertaining and thoroughly enjoyable. Fito was highly knowledgeable and had a great relationship with the proprietors we visited. The wineries themselves were exceptionally well selected by Rebeca who also did a great job communicating with us beforehand. The tour took in large to small, modern to traditional. We tasted some excellent wines and learned a great deal about the Rioja way of producing great wines. Lunch in the old town of Laguardia provided us with the best tapas/pintxos of our trip. Without doubt the tour was a highlight of our holiday.

The best wine tour in Rioja! There was excellent information and communication throughout the entire process, from booking to the end of the tour. We were picked up at the hotel on time and received a wealth of valuable information about Rioja and its wines throughout the day. The tour was both entertaining and educational, and we had the opportunity to visit some very interesting wineries. Each winery had its unique approach to wine production, and it was fascinating to see the different techniques used. We also enjoyed a very pleasant and surprising lunch, featuring delicious local food and wine. This must be one of the best wine tours we have ever been to! Robert and Rebecca have been very generous with their knowledge and time. The choice of wineries that we visited are smaller, family-type wineries. Which worked out well for us, as this was the type of local wine experience that my wife and I desired. Lunch was simply amazing, and after lunch the weather was good enough for us to go to a nearby vineyard to pick grapes. Robert and Rebecca are great hosts! The tasting room that they have designed and built is conducive for wine appreciation, and it also housed a display of tools and artefacts that had been historically used in wine making in the Rioja region. For us, it felt like a tasting room and wine museum visit rolled into one! At the end of the tour, we were even gifted with a personalised bottle of their home-made wine! A superb and unforgettable experience and a must-try for anyone who wants to know more in-depth about La Rioja and its wines!

Five of us visited in June 2024. We were picked up by Robert in Logroño then taken to some incredible places throughout Rioja. First, we went to Bohedal, a women-owned and run family winery. This was the coolest winery I've ever visited. We got to taste wines as they were being made, taste the differences between the American, French, and Hungarian oak barrels. It felt so behind-the-scenes and unique - it was the most memorable part of the tour. We also went to an old cave-style winery (Lecea) that was super interesting, albeit more focused on tourism at this point. Finally, we had an amazing meal with Robert and Rebecca at their home overlooking Rioja's beautiful vines. This is one of the best tours I've ever been on. Each aspect felt deliberate and considerate. I cannot recommend this tour more highly - everyone should do it while visiting Rioja.

We did this tour as part of my wifes 30th birthday and if I could give it 10 stars I would. Rebeca was excellent helping with scheduling and logistics, Fito was a wonderful guide and driver. We have done other wine tours in Burgundy and Bourdoux and this one was the best of the bunch. The wineries were unique and the entire experience was wonderful from start to finish. Seriously one of the highlights of our trip!!

Amazing, high quality wine tour with lovely people! Incredible, personalized and intimate tour. We were stuck with a very inflexible schedule due to travel and wanted to customize a wine tour for a Sunday (where a lot of wineries are closed) Rebeca got back to me quickly when I asked for a quote and customized a private tour for around the region. We were picked up by Roberto and Fito who were lovely gentlemen who made me and my friend so comfortable. They took us three amazing locations and we learned soooo much and enjoyed amazing wines. They even took some amazing quality photos of us on the tour. This truly takes wine tasting to the next level, we ended the tour at their personal home and they gave a personalized wine bottle with a picture of us on it! That was probably the best wine tour I’ve ever had in my life. The arrangers were so accommodating, nice, friendly, etc. The two wineries tours were both exceptional. The tour covered an excellent family winery, a niche boutique winery and a larger scale modern facility. Fito was an excellent guide. He was both knowledgeable and engaging.

Fantastic tour with Rioja Like a Native! We signed up for the full day Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa tour. Later, we added on a private half day tour as we had limited time in the area and wanted to make the most of it. Both days were 10/10 the whole way! Fito, Rebeca, and Robert were all fantastic, very knowledgeable, and fun. Everything is taken care of for you and you can relax, learn, and enjoy. Big thanks to Rebeca and Roberto for this incredible tour! The visited bodegas were amazing, we tasted same wines from different barrel agings, did a blind tasting, saw different subregions of Rioja such as Basc Country and had a lovely tour through medieval town Laguardia. The time spent with the group was exceptional and more then just a wine tour, we could share many lovely conversations. Great day in La Rioja with Rioja Like A Native Robert said when he picked us up that we weren’t going on a wine tour, we were going on a wine experience, and he was absolutely correct. From wine caves to an ultra modern winery, to a blind tasting, with some great little towns in between the whole day was an experience that we don’t think we will forget any time soon. When I go on a wine tour, I want to discover the people, the place, and the culture and not just taste wines, as I can do that anywhere! I am happy to say that that is what happened when my wife and I spent the day with Robert and Rebeca! So the company's name is perfect because we really did experience Rioja like a native. What was so special about this tour, is that while Rebeca and Robert know Rioja better than I EVER will, they were kind enough to humor me and set-up visits to two producers I was really interested in AND added one of the producers they know to round out the day. And by the way, the wine producer they recommended is where we had lunch, made by the woman who owns the winery!!!! I can tell you there is no better way I like to experience wine than in this ultra-local fashion, wine from the estate paired with food from the estate, it was absolutely fantastic! Just when we thought the day could not get any better, Rebeca and Robert ended the day with a beautiful glass of wine made by Rebecca’s father on their terrace overlooking the vineyard - it was just amazing! My wife and I have had wine tours in all over France and Italy, and but none will EVER compare to our day in Rioja! We will be coming back to spend much more time with Rebeca and Robert, that is for sure!

Our full-day private Rioja wine tour with Rebeca was amazing. She is an expert guide and native of Rioja from a grape-growing family. The tour was very thoughtfully put together to cover a wide spectrum of Rioja’s wine culture, from large, well-known wineries to small, family-owned operations, and it was punctuated with plenty of history and information about the region. A highlight of our trip! In early April my partner and I did the full day Rioja winery tour by bicycle through Rioja Like a Native. The tour included visits to two wineries, one in Laguardua, and one in Eltziego, as well as a suggested route. Rebeca was extremely helpful both via email while I was arranging everything, and by WhatsApp once we were in Logroño. The evening before our ride, Rebeca's colleague Jota delivers our bikes (we opted for traditional, rather than electric) to the hotel Sercotel Calle Mayor has an indoor bike rack, so were were confident in leaving them overnight. In the morning, we set off on the 50km round trip trek. I had adjusted the first part of the ride, because there was a specific photo that I wanted of Laguardia, and through my research had discovered the location. Both winery visits would be in Euskadi, (País Vasco), which is in the La Rioja wine region, but not within the autonomous community of La Rioja itself. The ride is challenging, especially the part that I had added, and there were a few times that we walked the bikes up especially steep hills. The effort was worth it as the views and surrounding were absolutely breathtaking. We arrived about 45 minutes before our tour, and wandered the streets taking photographs. The first winery was Bodegas Carlos San Pedro Pérez de Viñaspre, a small family owned company within the walls of Laguardia. We were the only two on the tour, and Carlos was extremely friendly, explaining much about the industry while we toured the caves 8m below ground. When it came time to do a tasting, he started us with a joven, straight from the tank where it was aging. We then tried a crianza, a reserva, and a gran reserva, while he explained the criteria that each one must meet. Trying these wines in the cellars where they are aged is an experience that we will never forget. after the tour, we purchased a bottle of their reserva, then made our way back to our bikes to continue with the day. The route to the second winery, Marqués ed Riscal in Eltziego was all downhill, and we reached speeds of about 50kph, and before we knew it, we were at the winery. The route took us to a gated entrance that was closed, but there was a sign pointing us in the direction of where we needed to go. We arrived just in time for the tour, which was a group of about 15 people, and Ahmed began by showing us the Frank Gehry designed hotel that is part of the complex. He then explained the growing seasons, and harvesting process. Marqués de Riscal is a much more modern facility than Bodegas Carlos San Pedro Pérez de Viñaspre, and the operation is quite impressive, but I preferred the more traditional to the high tech. I don't want to give the impression that I didn't enjoy it, because I did. It was a very well done tour, and we gained some additional insights here that completed things that Carlos had told us in Laguardia. We completed the visit with another tasting and tapas while Ahmed told us a few more facts about the wines. Before we left, we purchased a couple bottles of wine and some gifts, including a ring made by a local artisan that evoked the design of the hotel. We continued the route, mostly along gravel recreational paths and arrived back at the hotel, exhausted but exhilarated. I contacted Jota to arrange the pick up of the bikes, got cleaned up, and went out for tapas on Calle Laurel. This ride was a highlight of this year's two week visit to Spain.

Wonderful Day Enjoying Wine and Wineries. My friend and I took this wonderful Rioja wine tour and had a great day. There were only 3 others, and the 5 of us, plus the van driver, had a very nice day together. The Van was comfortable and we could see the countryside easily as we drove. The wineries we stopped at were not the most famous, which was absolutely perfect, but each was very special and unique. The people at the wineries were lovely and informative. We were never rushed - plenty of time to taste and to buy, but no pressure to buy. The last stop at the vineyard was better than expected. We not only walked the vineyard, we were invited into the owners wine cellar and had a wonderful tasting. I highly recommend this tour. I would definitely do it again.

One of the best wine tours we’ve taken during our travels. Rioja is a beautiful region and Robert, Pjotr & Rebeca were wonderful from booking through saying goodbye. We visited a really interesting winery in a cave, followed by a beautiful family run modern winery with amazing views of the region and then after lunch we had a special surprise tasting stop that really was the cherry on top of a perfect day. This tour was one of the highlights of our trip! We knew we were red wine lovers but this tour made us fall in love with the Rioja wine region. We were blessed with stunning weather the day of our tour and enjoyed the rolling valleys of the vines as we were driven around. Rebeca was super lovely to communicate with via whatsapp and email and we were glad we were able to meet her on the day. Robert was our driver for guide and imparted his knowledge of the region to us through out the day. We were fortunate enough to taste wines straight from the barrel on a family run as well as wine straight from a vat in an underground cave. Everything was delicious and we felt we were getting the true tastes of the region. I have coeliac disease and had let Rebeca know at the booking and I was very grateful to be given gluten free food at both lunch and the dried meats offering. This is truly a unique experience and is now a treasured memory. We're so appreciative of the hard work Rebeca and Robert have done to create such a wonderful showcasing of the area.

Don't miss this in Rioja!: What a great day! I'll admit that I am a wine geek and this tour blew me away. We did the two day wine tour and had a blast!! Each Bodega (Winery) that we visited presented something different from the other. We visited everything from an ultra modern facility to one that dated back to the 16th century that was still using cave systems to produce and store their wines! In a small family run winery visited, we were lucky enough to taste wine straight from the barrels and were able to taste the difference the wood made to the wine. Our lunch stop was in a very pretty village and Rebeca took us on a guided walk after a superb tapas lunch (with more wine!). It was so hard to choose because all of the tapas looked superb. We had a brilliant day with Rebeca; her English was excellent and she was very friendly.

Rebeca and Pedro personalize the experience. This is not just a winery tour. They are locals and sharing information about the region and very knowledgeable on the history and the uniqueness of each of the wineries visited. The tour treated us like we were friends and wanted to make sure we enjoyed and learned something new. The wineries selected were each unique and distinctive. We loved how the tour took us to three different bodegas that all gave a unique glimpse of the wine making process in a reknowned region! Roberto was incredibly knowledgeable and fun, and made it a very personalized experience with his ability to provide helpful annecdotes as well as relate to our limited knowledge. The tastings were excellent and the tours were in depth leaving us with an exceptional base to take back home. A Great Day with Rioja Like a Native Review of Rioja Like A Native Wine Tour We arranged a private, full-day wine tour for four of the Rioja wine region with Rebecca of Rioja Like a Native Wine Tour. The scheduling and arrangements were seamlesly easy due to Rebecca's input and experience. We altered the tour because we were staying in Laguardia (which was a stop on the tour) and opted for lunch in a small family winery instead. Our tour guide, Robert, was fantastic! He was super knowledgeable, friendly and a lot of fun. We visited (and had wine tasting at) a larger winery first and then two smaller, family-owned winery. Each stop was planned that we would learn varied and different aspects of the wine making process. The entire day was simply fantastic and we would highly recommend Rebecca and Robert to anyone considering a Rioja wine tour. Date of experience: June 2022

The Greatest Wine Tour Ever! Jun 2022 • Couples What I will say is Wow!! Rebeca and her team did a fantastic job helping 2 couples plan and execute a fantastic tour of the Rioja wine region. You will not find a more knowledgeable guide anywhere. She knows all the secret spots and we had the greatest lunch of roast lamb at a restaurant in Haro called Terete. Terete also has a wine cave that we had a personal tour of by a member of the family. I can not recommend more highly.

Every single experience was fantastic and we would highly recommend Rioja like a Native for any tours you might want in the area. Great time with Rioja Wine Tours! Our group of 3 had an excellent time on this tour. Rebecca and her husband are so friendly and knowledgeable of the area and wineries. The wineries on the tour were diverse and a perfect overview of Rioja and the food was amazing! Rebecca was very responsive while we were booking the tour, answered all of my questions quickly and arranged for separate pick up for us stay in Haro so we didn't have to go all the way to Logrono. An absolutely amazing day with Ozom guides We can’t praise Rebecca and Robert enough for giving us a fantastic tour of the wonderful Rioja district. Apart from learning heaps about the wines, the vineyard’s and the rich history of Rioja we had really fun with tonnes of laughs throughout the day. Do not miss this experience! Hands down one of the best tours/excursions we have done. This wine tour through Rioja was informative and fun. It is a full day but it was well paced. Rebecca communicated regularly throughout the process. Our guide was Jose and he was the best. He made sure we had everything we needed. He was full of local information and took us to places we never would have known about or been able to see. We were able to see the winery his dad started that he now runs and try wines he had made. We also spent part of our afternoon at a small hillside town dating back to the very early days of Spain and enjoyed a great lunch and local experiences. It was truly a unique tour where we got to see everything from modern-day large-scale wineries, to the old traditional way of making wine. You will not be disappointed with this trip!

A different experience in positive way May 2022 Rioja Like a Native all day private tour with Rebeca Perez was arranged by our Spanish friends for me and my wife. I had been to Rioja number of times over the years (first visit in early 1980s) and have enjoyed the Rioja wines all along the way. In the past, we visited large major wineries. This time Rebeca arranged visit to four small, family owned wineries where the family owners gave us a tour and guided us thru the background and history of their wines. This made the visit really special and very informative for us. I'd highly recommend Rebeca when planning a visit to the La Rioja region. To me who enjoys wines and visited most of the major wine regions in the world this day was different in a positive way.

This was a really amazing wine tour. Rebeca picked us up in San Sebastian. It was great that she provided this car service for us. She planned a wonderful all day wine tour with a great lunch in Laguardia at Doria Blanca. Our tour guide Jose Maria was excellent. He was very friendly, knowledgeable and spoke good English ! We visited three wineries, Marques De Riscal, Luis Camas and Valentin Pascual ( this was Jose Maria's family winery which made it very special.) Jose drove my wife and I all around, provided interesting info about the region and wine and stayed with all the time. I have been on a lot of wine tours, but nothing like this. I highly recommend you book a wine tour with Rebeca. It will be a very special experience you won't forget ! Yes, and we drank a lot of great Rioja wine !

The tour Rebecca hosted for us was above all expectation. She has a great ambiance about her which makes for a wonderful and relaxt atmosphere. She shares her passion at a personal level, involving all her guests equally. We had a fantastic day and didn’t even realize how much information soaked in during the visits to three entirely different wineries. All the guests (7 in total) bonded quickly, the great wines helped ofcourse ;) and we made friends from different continents. It was an experience in which we would not change a single thing. We visited the Rioja region with friends recently on the back of my love for the local Rioja wine and were not disappointed. Roberto and Rebeca organise and run the tours and were nothing short of outstanding. With their huge depth of knowledge and relationships with the local vineyards as well as their friendly and helpful approach to everything makes this a tour to remember. Not only were we blown away by the quality and the difference of all of the wineries but were exposed to some real gems of Northern Spain which only happened because of this tour. I cannot recommend this tour enough and even though I have now done this tour I would happily do this again. Well done Rebeca and Roberto for making our visit to Spain a tour to remember. On a whistle-stop tour to the Basque country to watch the Vuelta would have been rude not to visit the world famous Rioja wine region. On looking at other reviews this looked like a great trip that could be somewhat personalised and would give a more rounded view of the region and not just visiting a few wineries. Robert is a great guide and we were briefly joined by Rebeca who had carried out all the organising. Visited a variety of wineries from large commercial, Muga, through to an esoteric underground one in Laguardia Bodegas Carlos Sanpedro. We wre even lucky enough to go to an open air wine crushing in the old rock basin experience. Very interesting, especially tasting the effect of what type of oak wine was aged in and all together a super experience.

We had a great day with Rebeca touring 3 Bodegas including lunch in LaGuardia which is must place to visit. The 3 Bodegas we visited were Bohedal, Lecea and Marques de Riscal. All were very different in their own way from producing wine in caves, to a small independent Bodega to a large producer. All staff were very friendly and helpful during the tours especially during the 2 smaller Bodega tours. Rebeca is very knowledgeable on the Rioja region and the wine industry and is a great person to spend a day with. Without a doubt I would recommend a tour with Rioja Like a Native to anyone. Salud

We had such an amazing time on our tour with Rioja Like a Native. Booking with Rebecca was a great consultative process and Robert was a fantastic guide and made it feel more like touring with a friend than a guide. He was super knowledgeable and went the extra mile to make sure we were comfortable, having fun and learning. The selection of wineries was perfect and allowed us to experience different environments, wine making methods and flavours. It was a great trip through the history of the region as well. Rebeca was probably the best tour guide we have had and my wife and I have been traveling to Europe annually since 2015. Being a small tour company, she herself has cultivated personal relationships with the wine makers on the tour, which makes for a very special experience. I felt a lot of pressure finding an experience that could please both my parents who are from Navarra and my husband who is from the US and on his first trip to Europe. Rebeca and Roberto’s tour was the perfect choice. It was easy to set up at the last minute, Rebeca was very communicative, and the tour itself was amazing. Rebeca picked us up from our hotel in Legrono (Hotel Calle Mayor- also a great choice) and we travelled to a family owned boutique winery about 30 minutes away. On the drive, Rebeca provided lots of interesting information about the area and wine making in general. At the winery, we met up with an Australian couple on their honeymoon and received the experience of blending our own Crianza from the barrels. We learned about the importance of the barrel in the wine making process which is something that had never crossed my mind. We were joined by Roberto in LaGuardia, a tiny, car-less village in existence since the 800s for a lovely lunch and a walk through the streets to the next winery. We went into the depths of the village’s caves for a wine tasting experience that we’ll never forget. On the way back to the car, we popped into local shops and had plenty of moments for photos. Which are plentiful in a village with such history and amazing views of the surroundings areas. When we arrived back at our hotel, we were gifted with a bottle of wine from Rebeca’s fathers personal vineyard. Rebeca and Roberto were amazing hosts of the area and provided us an experience we will never forget. They mentioned some other tours they coordinate for food-lovers and if I had the opportunity to take one of those, I wouldn’t hesitate. The day was well worth the price and on my next trip to Spain, I will definitely be contacting them for a possible multi-day experience.

Best wine tour we have ever done!! This was easily the greatest wine tour my fiance and I have ever done. I'm not going to divulge to much about the tour as I think it should be left as a surprise to everyone who does it. You will be amazed!! Rebeca was amazing to deal with in our entire communication leading up to the trip. She put together an amazing tour for us. Roberto was an amazing guide. He was extremely knowledgeable of the Rioja region and my fiance and I had a great time talking with him about all things wine, Rioja and Spain in general. What an amazing day we spent with Rebeca in Rioja. She planned the perfect day for my husband and I as we were celebrating our 10 year wedding Anniversary. We went to three amazing bodegas, Gregorio Martinez, Valentin Pascual, Viña Real. Each one was so unique and such a joy to see and learn about all of the hard work that goes into wine making. We had an amazing lunch in Laguardia, which was such a very special place and we loved that she took us there. I cannot recommend Rebeca enough, she was an absolute joy and felt like I gained a friend from the planning process and then the actual day. I look forward to sending people her way and hopefully coming again in the future.

Relaxing, entertaining, educational, great tasting, great views, great people. Two wineries, lunch, siteseeing architecture from the 9th century to the 21st. How wine is still made the old (19th century) way and how it is also made with 21st century technology! Our guide Rebeca was knowledgeable, relaxed and fun, as were the two winemakers we visited. We did this tour in English and I highly recommend it!

Don’t even think about it, use Rioja Like a Native wine tours!! My wife and I wanted a private custom wine tour. Rebecca and Robert were outstanding. Nice, fun and super knowledgeable. We are serious wine fans and Rebecca selected 2 boutique wineries that we just loved. We took a took a train from San Sebastián (2 hours), visited 2 really interesting wineries, had a fantastic lunch, and were back in San Sebastián by 9P. The tour was very personal with each of the visits hosted by the winery owners. Great wines too! We’ve done private wine tours in many wine regions and this was much more authentic and fun. We loved the whole experience. Just book it. These folks are awesome!

This is the MUST DO wine tour to do in Rioja. Rebeca & Robert were prompt, gracious, knowledgeable & passionate about the region and the wines. We were collected at 9:45am and returned around 6pm which encompassed a lovely lunch and wineries that we had specific requests. We asked that we see only centennial & bicentennial wineries as we are most keen on the history and underground caves. They chose fantastic wineries where we met with the winery owners, wine makers and got to spend time in amongst the vines as well as touring the facilities. Robert was the photographer & even used a drone overhead while we in the vineyards - a nice touch Highly Recommended tour by two lovely and passionate people

I joined a small group for a full day tour of the Rioja wine region with Rebeca and Roberto. The tour was brilliant - very informative about the strict controls on preparation and labeling of the wine; the wine making techniques, including visiting a 15th century underground winery that is still in operation; visiting a boutique winery with a special wine tasting showing the difference the type of wood barrel (French; American or Hungarian) has on the same grape juice; lunch in a medieval village named as one of the most beautiful villages in Spain. Rebecca and Robert are lovely people, very knowledgeable and attentive. The day tour will be unforgettable - the best winery tour I have ever been on - and is highly recommended. An absolutely incredible experience. It was more than we could have ever asked for! We were in touch with Rebeca since January to plan our trip to Rioja in October, and she was so great with communicating with us throughout the whole process. We gave her a few guidelines for what we wanted to do (including a hot air balloon ride that she helped us organize with a wonderful company) and she planned a two-day private, completely authentic tour with 2 winery tours + tastings on both days, followed by a picnic on the first day, and a typical Rioja lunch in a small town the second day. Apart from Rebeca's excellent planning skills, she was also such a wonderful guide!!! Cheerful, knowledgeable, and so sweet. We also spent some time with Roberto, the other guide, who was charming, and also very knowledgeable. We could not recommend Rioja Like a Native's services more, and look forward to coming back in the future to do more tours with this company!!

An amazing experience from start to finish. It was so easy to arrange our tour over the internet, thanks to Rebeca's efficiency, promptness to reply and superb English, and we were happy to follow her advice to organise a tailor made trip suited to our interests and previous experience. The day itself was a triumph, definitely the highlight of our road trip around Spain. Roberto, our guide, educated us with his knowledge of the region and the wine industry, and entertained us with his many stories. The wineries we visited were all different, offering us a varied perspective on the production of Rioja. And of course all the wines (and vermouths) we tasted were delicious. Our only regret was not booking a second day!

This was the best wine tour we've ever had! My partner and I took a wine tour with Rioja Like a Native in August. We struggled to decide what to see, so we asked Rebeca to choose for us. I'm so glad we took this approach! Rebeca picked us up at the hotel, and handed us off to Robert who is so knowledgable and so fun to be with. He took us to old family vineyards which is so much more meaningful than the big production places (you can easily visit the big places on your own). We learned a lot, and thoroughly enjoyed every minute of the day. And our lunch in Laguardia was an added bonus! We enthusiastically recommend Rebeca and Robert and Rioja Like a Native. What an outstanding wine tour!! Couldn’t be more pleased and satisfied! We wanted to tour the Rioja region during our trip to Spain and so began researching. Researched several sites and came across “Rioja Like a Native”. Emailed the site and immediately got a very detailed response from Rebeca with prices and options. Lots of flexibility for what we could do! Sounded perfect! Not knowing what to expect and being that the tour was going to be one of the main highlights of our trip, we were naturally apprehensive as to how the tour would go. But Rebeca (and Robert) were so so comfortable and knowledgeable about the region and the wines! So so very personable and accommodating!! Made us feel so right at home (“like a native”) and we had an incredible time!! The wineries they chose, the meal, the people we met, all just incredible! I can’t recommend an establishment or a company more than this one, regardless of the type! Hands down the best recommendation I can give! You can NOT go wrong here! We had a most amazing day with Rebeca and Robert in June. They shared their technical knowledge as well as their love of the vineyard-covered countryside around Logrono. We had the opportunity to visit an immaculate state of the art winery and then the oldest where processes have stayed the same for so long. Both were family run operations where love and loyalty to the grape and to the process are unparalleled. Following our fascinating half day tour we enjoyed a feast- local meat barbecued on grapevines themselves and accompanied by Rioja style potatoes, salad, local bread and started off with the local variety of incomparable bean stew with chorizo and chunks of pork slowly simmered to perfection. We ended the meal with a tart and coffee. Delicious from start to finish. Of course all washed down with endless bottles of delicious Rioja. Rebeca and Robert did everything they could to make our introduction to Rioja a fabulous one and our group of 10 friends are thinking very seriously about returning to the region to have another day with Rioja like a Native. We started off as a group of people on a tour and ended as friends. I can not recommend Rioja like a Native highly enough. Thank you both for a great experience. We are just beginning our plans for next time and another day with you....

Rebeca and Robert provided me with a superb day of wine tasting and education, with sightseeing ( photo opportunities) and regional dining. Best wine tour ever! Once contact was established, Rebeca and I emailed back and forth determining a personalized itinerary. Keeping more to smaller family-run boutique wineries, as well as Haro-garagistas, she exposed me to providers I'd never encounter in the USA. Plus our driver, Robert (partner) is a professional photographer, so I had more to talk about. They knew great photo ops as we wended through the rolling beautiful countryside. With a on time pickup in a brand new vehicle, through 5 tastings and a light lunch, to the drop off in time to hear Mass that evening in Logrono, the day was perfect. And they have arranged shipment of the mixed case of wine I collected along the way. Truly, a full service provider, great communication, and friendly to boot. My case of wine arrived about a month later, right when I asked for it to be here.

Out of hundreds of winery tours in Rioja, if you want the real thing, do this. The tour was very personalized. Routes change as you want because they know it all so well. I did a solo trip where my guide and I drove through the little caminos along the gorgeous autumn leaves of the vinyards, took photos and walked across the vinyards like we own them! You do stop by at some of the big wineries to hear about the history of Rioja wine, which is a must I suppose, but after that is completely up to your choice. If you want to plan your own special winery trip, have Rebeca help you. Again, I thank her and my guide Itzi it was the best winery tours I've had so far.
